Interview with the webmaster of SweetBet.com:
1. Are you a full-time gambling webmaster, or have you got another job as well?
I'm a full-time gambling webmaster. I started developing my first gambling website back in 2000 while working a few casual jobs to support myself. By 2002, I was generating enough money to quit my casual jobs and become a full-time gambling webmaster.
2. How long have you been involved in the gambling industry? What drew you to being a webmaster?
I was initially a dating site webmaster. I was promoting a number of dating affiliate programs, as well as running my own dating services. Then one day, I noticed how a friend of mine was generating much bigger paychecks with far less traffic. That's when I started building my first gambling website back in 2000.
3. What did you do before you became a webmaster?
I had a number of jobs from managing a liquor store, to stocking grocery shelves in supermarkets, to working as a security guard in shopping centers.
4. How do your family and friends feel about your work as a gambling webmaster?
All of my family members are involved in the online gambling industry. That's the funny thing. Sometimes I telephone my mother and ask her if so and so have paid her yet, and we'd talk about the different affiliate programs, and the latest SEO techniques. My friends don't know what I do. I just tell them that I'm a website designer and leave it at that.
5. One of the biggest issue affiliates face is time management. What tips can you offer your fellow webmasters?
I think that time management gets easier with experience. I'm an early morning person and will usually get up very early and have most of my work finished before anyone even wakes up. What I don't finish, I eventually get done when I have some spare time during the day, or after the children have gone to bed at night. I also outsource a lot of work. Gone are the days when I used to sit down and write 500+ word articles on a regular basis. I don't have time for that anymore, so I outsource much of the work from article writing to video creation, and sometimes web design. What tips can I offer? I have a "To Do" list on which I write what jobs must be completed by which day. Then I work my way down through it and complete what needs to be done for today, while leaving tomorrow's jobs for tomorrow.
6. Where do you go or what do you do when you need to get as far away from work as possible?
When I need a break, I will usually drive to a nearby city and stay for a few days with the family. We were in Melbourne a few weeks ago for the Australian Open. Melbourne is a beautiful city with so much to see and do. But as always, I couldn't totally get my mind off work. I spent a lot of time reading the forums, etc via my ipad.
7. What do you like about the gambling industry?
I like the freedom of being able to work at any time and from anywhere I want. I can work as much or as little as I choose, and can generate an income without leaving the house.
8. What don't you like about the gambling industry?
There are a lot of shady gambling sites out there that are giving the industry a very bad name.
9. What do you look for when you sign up with an affiliate program, and why?
I look for reputable affiliate programs that other well-known affiliates are promoting and recommending. When deciding whether to promote a particular affiliate program or not, I will usually visit a popular gambling affiliate forum and read what the other affiliates are saying about it, and what their experiences have been with it. If the majority of affiliates are complaining about it, or have had negative experiences promoting it, then I will stay away from it and won't promote it. If an online gambling property is dishonest with the affiliates, then it is very likely that it is also going to be shady with the players.
10. What's your favourite affiliate program to work with so far, and why?
There are many excellent affiliate programs out there. Some affiliate programs work better for me, while other programs work better for other affiliates. It depends on the market the affiliate is targeting, and the quality of the affiliate's traffic. I work with many great affiliate programs, but the one that I have had the most amount of success with is Fortune Affiliates. I've been working with them for many years. They have great products, great promotional offers, above average player conversion and retention, and excellent support.
